Flood Information — Posted August 9, 2008

Ruidoso is open and is largely unaffected
with 95% of Ruidoso having no obvious impact from the heavy rain. All highways entering and leaving Ruidoso are open and undamaged. Inside the Village there are several detours around residential and canyon routes.

While the flooding of the Rio Ruidoso, July 26 – 27, 2008, through the center of the Village of Ruidoso created havoc with businesses along the river and stranded vacationers in remote campgrounds, most of Ruidoso, was undamaged and open for business.

The majority of the damage took place along low-lying areas of the Rio Ruidoso River, with part of the Upper Canyon area affected as well. The lower portion of the Upper Canyon did not sustain significant damage but there was damage to the 2nd bridge. The Upper Canyon is largely open for business.

The vast majority of area lodges, cabins and hotels are open for business as usual.

Lincoln National Forest officials have closed a few areas of the Smokey Bear Ranger District, due to flood related damage and associated hazards. This includes areas that are north of U.S 70 and west of NM State Highways 48 and 37. There is one localized road closure, Forest Road 9038D north of NM State 380, in the general vicinity of lower Salazar Canyon. There will be an exception to this closure area, the Cedar Creek area where developed Forest Service recreation facilities will remain open, namely the Fitness Trail, Cedar Creek Picnic Area and Pavilion, and Sam Tobias Group Campgrounds 1, 2, and 3. The remaining portion of the Smokey Bear Ranger District that are general north of State Highway 380 and east of Ruidoso will remain open.
